Celebrate Mother’s Day with These Amazing Activities

The easiest thing you can do is let your mother pick the activity or activities that she would love to do with you, but some mothers might not know or want to be surprised by you, that’s when it gets a little tricky.

The activities you can do with your mother will depend on her preferences and age, but let me give you some inspiration so you have different options to choose from.

Mother’s Day takes place in May so the weather is often nice, therefore making outdoor activities a great idea!

1. Brunch

Mother’s Day always falls on a Sunday, which is great because Sunday is brunchtime anyway!

You and your mother can sleep as long as you would like and get together in a cozy brunch bar to have a nice chat and enjoy the delicious food.

If you like the comfort of your home more, you can get some croissants, pastries, orange juice, and champagne to make mimosas and organize a brunch for her at your or her home (whichever works best for the both of you).

There is nothing like eating yummy foods and catching up with your mother on Mother’s Day, it’s just so nice and cozy.

2. Midget golf

Midget golf is a fun sport for the whole family. Try it out on Mother's Day.

Midget golf is a fun activity to do with your family. It’s outdoors and not too difficult so that even little children can play. If you have a midget golf court not too far from you, give it a go!

You can do this with your mother and maybe your siblings, or invite the entire family, as there are probably many moms who would like to spend some time with their family as well on Mother’s Day.

Make it a bit competitive to spice it up if you like and have an award for the winner of the game. This way everyone will try their best!

Most often, there is also an opportunity to have a few drinks afterward so you could do this as well to finish up the fun activity.

3. Having a walk

Nature is calling in springtime! Mother’s Day falls in May which most often means that the weather is fine and the sun’s shining bright. You should take advantage of this and go for a walk in nature while the sun is shining!

Go to a forest, park, or the woods to have a long walk with your mother and enjoy the natural surroundings and each other’s company. Bring your camera or smartphone with you to take some pictures with your mother or make her a nice new profile picture for her social media.

If your mother is into long walks, you can plan out a specific route to follow, make sure that you don’t get lost, and get those miles in.

4. Bike ride

A bike ride when the weather is fine can be a nice way to spend Mother's Day.

Plan out a little route and take your mother on a (e-)bike ride. Bring along a picnic basket and search for a nice place to eat lunch together on a picnic bench or bring a picnic blanket to sit on.

By doing a bike ride, you can see many different villages and take in every beautiful thing you see.

You can make it as long or as short as you like and take breaks here and there to have a drink at a local bar. You can also go by e-bike, so you don’t need to be all trained or take a regular bike and go as slow as you want, it is supposed to be enjoyable for your mother, not a difficult task to do.

It’s like going on a mini adventure together, which can do wonders for building an even bigger connection than you already have.

5. Visiting a zoo

If your mother gets all happy when she sees animals, the zoo is probably a good place to visit. Looking at animals living their life is very entertaining.

I wrote a blog post about Pairi Daiza and why you should consider visiting this particular zoo as it is the best zoo in Europe. But you can also go to an animal sanctuary like ‘De Zonnegloed’ if you want to support animals in need whilst visiting the animals at the same time.

Check out my blog post about 14 fun things to do in spring if you want to learn more about an animal sanctuary and maybe get even more ideas to do with your mom on Mother’s Day as well.

6. Go to the spa

Have some me-time with a massage.

Most women love to relax in wellness, so for most moms, you can’t go wrong with this activity. Booking a trip to the spa can be just what you and your mother need!

Enjoy a massage together and let all your muscles relax, you will feel so great afterward. When you experience stress, you are likely to build up some tension in your muscles that you should get rid of to feel like a happy, relaxed human again.

You can also chill out in the hot tubs and let the warm water do its thing, or go for a mani-pedi or facial. Treat yourself and your mother to this awesome self-care relaxation session. What a lovely way to spend Mother’s Day.

7. Have her favorite dinner

Celebrating with food is always a good idea. In my family, it is a tradition that the celebrated person may choose whatever they like to eat for that day. So at least make sure that your mom can have her favorite dinner this Mother’s Day!

If your mother loves dining out, take her to her favorite restaurant or try a new promising restaurant and pay for her. If she would just be as happy with a home-cooked meal, you can cook it yourself and save money on this part, which will give you some budget to buy her a lovely gift.

8. Go shopping

Shopping or window shopping for jewelry can be fun on Mother's Day.

Take your mom on a shopping spree on Mother’s Day. This way, she can pick out her gift herself!

Strolling around in the shopping streets can be quite fun if you love shopping, seeing all the new fashions hanging out, and trying on many different things to see what looks good on you. If you shop together, you can give your honest opinion to each other, which will help prevent a bad bargain.

Try on the same outfit and take a picture together to keep as a memory, such fun!

You can also do a window shopping session to get some inspiration for when the season sales are there if you are shopping on a budget. In the shopping streets, there are plenty of food and drink establishments where you can rest and enjoy a nice beverage.

9. Spend a day at the beach

A beach day is a great idea when the weather is nice and the sun is shining. There are plenty of things to do at the beach that will keep you and your mother entertained on Mother’s Day.

You can go for a walk on the dike or along the shoreline, dip your feet into the water, and look for beautiful shells. Go out for lunch in one of the seafood restaurants and taste some delicious fresh fish. Try watersports if you are up for this or play beach games.

Add a tanning session where you just lay down on a beach towel or bring or rent some beach chairs to make yourself more comfortable. Read a magazine, listen to some music, or just enjoy doing nothing for a while.

Go have a cocktail in a fancy beach bar and have a nice chat with your mom. Spending Mother’s Day at the beach can be so wonderful.

10. Do something she’s always wanted to do together

Attending a pottery workshop together can be a great way to spend Mother's Day.

Do not forget that Mother’s Day is all about your mom, so if you want to make her happy, you should do things that she loves to do.

Maybe your mother would love to try out a new hobby but is scared to do so alone, this would be the perfect day to join her in a workshop to see if this might be something for her.

Doing a workshop together can be a good bonding practice as you get to experience a new thing together. The connection between you and your mother deserves to be cherished and appreciated, but sometimes, you might want to give it a boost by exploring new things with one another.

Most moms will be happy just because they get to spend more time with you, they don’t care about fancy things that much, as long as they get to connect to you and feel your love.

Ask your mother what activity she is curious about and would love to try, and make it possible for her to do this with you.

Perfect Mother’s Day Gifts

Although your mother probably says she doesn’t want or need gifts, she would certainly love to get something nice from you! Give your mother something that fits her perfectly and she will be over the moon!

This is a list of different types of interests that your mother can have with gift recommendations per type, take a look at it and decide which category or categories apply to your mother and see if you like my recommendation!

I’ve found some fun gifts for all these different categories to give you some inspiration to surprise your mom on Mother’s Day!

Nature Lovers

A Gardener of the Year mug with a cute spoon looking like a shovel is a great gift for the garden-loving mother, she will be surprised with the tiny shovel that’s for sure.

A plant propagation station aka plant terrarium that your mom can put in any room where she wants to look at her plants. The design of the terrarium is also very esthetical and pleasing to look at and can be placed anywhere.

Funny socks are always a fun gift to give to someone. If your mother loves plants and is more of a plant person than a people person, give her these funny socks with the saying “Plants get me” and a drawing of a person watering a plant on them.

Book Worms

Books for book worms.

If your mother has a lot of books, she might benefit from having some bookends to keep them standing up straight. These are very simple yet effective to do the job!

You can never go wrong buying this Mother’s Day bookmark if your mom is a book lover, as it has a heartwarming text on it to make her feel appreciated and loved by you every time she picks up her book.

If you want to be sure that your mother is happy with your gift, buy her a gift certificate from a book store, this way she can choose whatever book she likes!

Foodies

This 6-piece bamboo cooking utensil set with lovely writing on it can be a great gift for a mother who loves to cook.

A great coffee or tea mug can not be forgotten on the list of awesome gifts! It’s a funny sloth mug with the message ‘today I will do absolutely nothing’ as your mother shouldn’t be bothered to do anything on Mother’s Day!

Meet Shelly! These cute measuring cups and spoons are perfect for foodies and the design is absolutely adorable (if you don’t mind snails). There is also a variant that looks like cherries if your mother hates snails…

Buy her an air fryer to cook delicious food in if she doesn’t have one already! It has great ratings on Amazon and is easy to use and clean.

Music Enthusiasts

If your mom loves music, give her a musical gift for Mother's Day.

I think it’s a great idea to give a music lover some earplugs to protect their ears while listening to or making loud music. Your mother will still be able to enjoy good music while diminishing the chance of getting tinnitus. You could also take her to get custom-made earplugs with an audiologist, these are more expensive though.

If your mom is a guitarist and loves to wear a necklace once in a while, get her this guitar pick-holder necklace! It is a fashionable yet practical necklace to store her guitar picks while playing or to keep them with her every day in case she finds a guitar to freestyle! Maybe she has a lucky pick that she wants to keep on her all the time and this is the perfect way to do it!

You can also get your mother concert tickets from her favorite band or buy some band merch online.

Cozy Homebodies

This oversized wearable blanket is amazing for all homebodies, you can move around without losing your blanket and enjoy the softness of the sherpa inside. There are also many colors available, so pick your mom’s favorite color and get her this awesome blanket/hoodie to wear indoors.

This gift basket is filled with a lavender-scented candle, bath salt, bath bomb, etc., and is the perfect gift for your mother on Mother’s Day if she wants to relax and wind down or just enjoy a nice spa session at home.

If your mom doesn’t have a bathtub but would love to experience the scents that come along with bath bombs, she has to try these body restore shower steamers! I didn’t even know these things existed until I found them on Amazon. These things will give you aromatherapy in the shower, and self-care to its max!

Candles are always nice to give to someone who likes to stay in and get cozy on the couch. Give your mother this funny lavender-scented candle to crack up a laugh and enjoy the amazing scent in the living room. You don’t need to wrap it, as it already comes in a stylish box.

This is such a silly gift but I would love to get this myself, so therefore, it must be great! It’s a shark blanket/hoodie/onesie and I would place it in the category of animal lovers, but I think it’s more a gift for people who love to stay in and chill in the comfort of their home (where they can be as weird as they would like).

Animal Lovers

Mother's Day gifts for animal lovers.

A window bird feeder is an original gift idea for bird lovers. You can see the birds from real close if they come to eat at your house.

A very cute mug for the cat-loving mother you have. You can go all pink or get the white one and it has a cat sitting inside of the mug, the creativity!

If your mother is not only your mom but is also a dog mom, you might want to get her this beautiful necklace as a gift from her dog on Mother’s Day. As she would never get one from her hairy child (unfortunately, dogs do not get paid so you will have to buy the gifts!).

Fashionistas

This jewelry tray can serve perfectly to display and keep all of your mother’s rings. It has the text ‘Remember I love you Mom’ on it with a little heart to show your mother how much you love her every time she looks at it.

It might be best to take your mother out shopping on Mother’s Day if she is a true fashionista, she would probably love to pick out her look by herself.

Creative Wonders

You can give a soap making kit as a Mother's Day gift.

These art dice might give your creative mother a boost of creativity when she is wondering about what she wants to paint or draw next. It could help her overcome a creativity block or think even more outside the box and have some new ideas.

A great gift for writers who sometimes suffer from writer’s block are these writing dice! They will unlock the creativity inside her mind.

Another gift for mothers who love to write is a big quality notebook with plenty of pages to do all their writing in.

If your mother is creative and wants to try something new, maybe now is the time to give her a soap-making kit filled with soap-making supplies!

Nerdy Moms

If your mom is a dinosaur or Jurassic Park enthusiast, you really should buy her this keychain! It has a funny dinosaur hanging next to a platelet that says: “Don’t mess with mamasaurus, you’ll get jurasskicked”. If this isn’t a geeky gift that is also perfect for Mother’s Day, I don’t know what is!

Maybe your mother wanted to be an astronaut growing up and is totally in love with outer space. If so, get her a piece of space! This is a gift she won’t easily forget, that’s for sure.
