Why should you have a morning routine you ask me? Because having a set routine will help you to go through the things you have to do faster and more efficiently. It will save you some time and energy.

Start with defining your goals
What goals do you want to achieve?
Goal-setting is extremely important as it motivates you to do things you value.
When you know WHY you want to achieve your goals, HOW you get there will be so much easier. Keep your why always in your mind.
So, think about your goals, long-term and short-term. This planner can help you with keeping track of all your goals in the different areas of your life. It will help you think about all the things you want to achieve, and by writing them down, you will feel more motivated to go after them!
Let me give you some examples. Maybe you want to do a really good job at work and you need to be in physically and mentally good shape to do so or you need to study and learn new things to keep improving. You could also be a stay-at-home parent who needs to get their kids to school every day and wants to be on time. Maybe you want to run a marathon next summer or just get fit to feel better about yourself. The list goes on and on.
Make your own list. Put every goal you could think of and want to achieve on this list. When you make your list, start making an action plan. Include all the tasks and subgoals you need to achieve to make progress and finally reach your goal!
Now you have done some deep thinking, let’s start talking about your productive morning routine.
The Best Morning Routine to Reach Your Goals
Wake up
Good morning sleepy head! Waking up is in my opinion one of the hardest parts of the day. I’m not a morning person at all so before I’ve got my coffee, don’t try to talk to me, please.
Not being a morning person can make life a little harder as modern society and most jobs demand everyone to get up early to start working early in the morning. UGH.
Do not use the snooze button!
When you want a good start to your day, you should listen to your alarm clock and not put it on snooze a thousand times. Don’t snooze, waking up won’t get easier if you keep lying in your warm, cozy bed.
A trick used by some people is to put your alarm clock on the other side of the room. This way, you will have to get out of bed to turn it off. This sounds horrible to me… so I don’t do this. This is a good tip for you when you lack the self-discipline necessary to listen to your alarm for the first time.
It’s also recommended to wake up on time. Figure out how much time you need to get ready in the morning. When you know how much time you need you can set your alarm clock to get up when you need to.
When you aren’t a morning person and you struggle with the early hours you have two options.
- Wake up earlier than you have to take your time and have a slow morning routine. If this sounds crazy to you, go for option two.
- Waking up as late as possible to be right on time at work or school.
I Prefer to have a little more time to become a more active human being.
Whatever you do, get up on time and start your day right.
Make your bed
When you manage to hop out of bed, clean up your bed a little.
It will be so nice to come home to a clean-looking bed!
Fluff the pillows and put the spread open so your bed can breathe during the day. You can put your PJs on the end, ready to crawl back in tonight.
Take a shower or do a quick splash
Taking a shower in the morning can be very refreshing. It can help you to feel more awake pretty quickly. However, if you are an evening person, you would probably prefer to do it in the evening as you will have more time to sleep this way.
When you don’t have or want to make time to shower in the morning, you could splash some water over your face as this will wake you up as well.
Brush your teeth
Dental tip: brush your teeth before having breakfast or wait at least 30 minutes after breakfast.
Brushing for two minutes with an electric toothbrush is preferred. You could also choose to floss in the morning. If you want to save some time, keep flossing for your evening routine.
Electric toothbrushes can cost a lot these days and you don’t need to get the most expensive one to have good results and oral health. Here is an electric toothbrush that is good but not too expensive, so consider buying this one if you want an electric toothbrush to step up your brushing routine without losing too much money.
If you want your coworkers or family to like you even more, clean your tongue with a tongue scraper. Using a tongue scraper will make your breath smell a lot better!
I wrote a few blog posts about dental health, so check them out if you are interested in taking good care of your teeth!
Skincare and hair
Take care of your skin, it will thank you later.
When you go outside, you should wear a cream on your face with SPF, even in the winter. This may sound a bit crazy, but the sun can and will damage your skin if you don’t protect it. Day cream with SPF is perfect.
From a certain age, you will see wrinkles appearing on your face and the only way to slow the process down is by protecting your skin (and stop smoking if you are a smoker)!
Get dressed and fix your hair and make-up
Choosing your outfit for the day in the morning will cost you some time so you might not want to add it to your morning routine.
Try to pick it out the night before so you can just jump right into it in the morning.
Choose an outfit that makes you feel good and comfortable. Wearing a nice outfit can boost your self-esteem and this is what you need to start goal-getting! You could also choose some matching jewelry or accessories in advance so you just need to put them on in the morning.
Do your hair and make-up the way you like it. You could do this really quick, comb your hair, fix a ponytail and only a bit or no mascara, or do a whole make-up and hair routine. It’s totally up to you!
Have breakfast (and COFFEE!)
Make sure to start your day off right by starting your body’s metabolism. Give it some energy!
Pick a breakfast that you like but also is good for your health. Making a nutritious breakfast with whole grains, proteins, and vitamins would be great.
When you choose something high in sugar you will get a sugar dip pretty fast and you don’t want that if you want to be productive during the day.
Coffee is a must-drink for me every morning! I love the taste of black coffee and it makes me feel more productive and accomplished. Tea is a good alternative, green and black tea will give you a boost of energy as well.
Exercise
This is more for the morning people over here, get up really early so you have enough time to do everything on this list and add exercising to it.
Especially if you’re training for a marathon or another sports competition, this should be added to your schedule. By doing your exercises or training, your morning routine becomes more productive as you work towards your bigger goals!
It’s good for your overall health to exercise regularly so you might as well try to fit it into your morning or evening routine.
When you don’t like to exercise, try stretching your body in the morning and maybe walking for a bit or taking your bike (electric) to work.
I take my electric bike to work when the weather is good so this makes my lazy ass a little bit more sporty.
Plan your personal goals
When you’re done doing everything that needs to be done by everyone, add the things you need to do to reach your goals.
I would suggest writing your goals down somewhere visible to you so you can look at this reminder every day.
Before you start adding all your goals to your morning routine, think about when you function optimally. I talked a bit about being a morning or evening person in this post but it’s very important to know which one you are and to adjust your schedule to this.
Morning Person
If you are a morning person, you can add the tasks that will help you achieve your goals to your morning routine.
When you are a morning person, add as many personal goals to your morning routine as you have energy for during the first hours of your day. This could be exercising, meditating, writing in a journal, learning something, working on a side hustle, reading a book, etc.
Evening Person
When you are an evening person, it might be easier for you to add tasks that will help you reach your goals in your evening routine.
As an evening person, you could adjust the basic things you need in your morning routine in a way that will help you achieve your goals easier. For example, you have to eat breakfast anyway so if you want to lose weight you could go for a more healthy breakfast. Another example for an evening person could be adding exercise to your morning routine by changing how you go to work. You could take an e-bike to work instead of a car when you live pretty close to your job or bike to the train station.
Planning
You could also plan something different every day of the week about the things you want to spend your time on.
When you have a plan, you’re more likely to go through with your goals instead of looking at your phone for hours on end scrolling through Instagram.
Write your goals down in a planner and plan very specific things you need to do to achieve them. Every time you get to check off a task that will bring you closer to your goal is so nice! It will give you more confidence that you will be able to reach your goal! Go for it!
To summarize
Find out what your personal goals are, divide them into actionable steps, and fit them into your daily routine.
You should create a morning routine that works for you and that also will help you reach your goals faster. Add all the necessary parts to the routine and adjust these parts to fit your personal goals best.
Try sticking to it so that it becomes a habit. It takes a while to form habits so don’t give up too soon. This way you will lose less of your valuable time and energy by doing random things that don’t align with your values and goals.
Make a time-efficient and productive morning routine during the week and also for the weekend. You could keep it the same or change it a bit because of the time available on the weekend.
Enjoy the efficiency and goal-getting!
